The
Akita
The Akita is one of seven breeds designated as a national monument in his native country of japan.
Breed History
The Akita is believed to have originated in the Odate region in Akita Prefecture on the Japanese island of Honshu. The breed was initially called the Odate Dog.European traders brought numerous breeds into Japan as trade increased in the 1800s. These European dogs cross bred with the Matagi-Inu and the long-coated Karafuto. The long-coated Akita is believed to be a direct descendant from the Karafuto.
